Shopify Google feed variants: id and item_group_id

Shopify Google feed variants need a distinct id for each sellable option and a shared item_group_id for related variants where Google requires it. Check color, size, images and landing pages before submitting the feed. StoreNex Feed processes a supported export and prepares channel feeds; you connect them to Merchant Center yourself. It does not export Shopify products through an app.

Separate the variant from its group

Consider an illustrative cotton shirt sold in blue, sizes S and M. Each size is a separate offer. Both belong to the same product group. A backpack from the same collection belongs elsewhere, even if its color matches.

id item_group_id color size
SHIRT-BLUE-S SHIRT blue S
SHIRT-BLUE-M SHIRT blue M

These example values explain the relationship; they are not a finished feed. Keep your actual identifiers stable. A Shopify variant ID and a Merchant Center offer ID can use different conventions depending on your exporter, so inspect the submitted value rather than assuming they match.

Check the Shopify export and Google destination

  1. Identify the tool or process producing your advertising feed. A standard Shopify product CSV is not automatically a Google product feed.
  2. Find each sellable variant and check its individual id.
  3. Verify the shared item_group_id and the attributes that distinguish the variants.
  4. Open each landing page and confirm the selected size or color, price and availability.
  5. Process only a supported source through Feed, inspect the output and connect the Google source in Merchant Center.
  6. Review the affected products after Google processes the update.

Avoid accidental changes when adding options

Adding a green shirt should create the appropriate new offers without changing the identity of existing blue sizes. Replacing the exporter can also change offer IDs. Compare the old and new output before switching sources.

Do not group unrelated products just to make the catalog look tidy. Do not use one offer ID for every size. Missing relationships should be corrected in the catalog or exporter; similar titles are not enough evidence to reconstruct them reliably.

Feed has no evidenced Shopify app or automatic Shopify catalog export. You supply a supported file or feed and manually configure the output in Google. Correct grouping does not guarantee approval or a specific shopping result layout. Image, price and policy problems need their own checks.

In short
  • Shopify Google feed variants need a distinct id for each sellable option and a shared item_group_id for related variants where Google requires it.

FAQ

Where can I find a Shopify variant ID?

Open the variant in Shopify admin and inspect its identifier. Then check the actual id sent in the advertising feed, because exporters can use a different convention. It is separate from item_group_id.

How do I add a Google product category?

Check google_product_category against Google’s current taxonomy. Category describes the product type; it does not replace color, size or variant grouping. Inspect the received values in Merchant Center.

How do I find my Merchant Center ID?

Check the selected account’s ID in Merchant Center. It identifies the account rather than a product or variant group. Confirm it before connecting a source, especially when managing several stores.
